Your Questions About Aquaponics Systems Answered

Linda asks…
Bugs in Aquaponics system?
I have an aquaponic system at my home. (Aquaponics and hydroponics are not the same thing, but very similar. Basically in aquaponics you are adding fish in the picture, the fish poop fertilizes the plants, and the plants clean the water for the fish.) Anyways, I am growing lettuce in my system, my lettuce is being eaten by insects. I did a little research and Dipel and Bontanigard eliminate worms and nats. Where I live we are going through a drought, we have 5 different kinds of roaches at my house. 4 of the 5 kinds have taken up residence in my lettuce, the roaches are everywhere. I heard neem oil will take care of them but if the oil gets on the lettuce, the plant wont taste good. Would Dipel and Bontanigard take care of the roaches ? Or are there other products I can try that will be safe for my system and myself?

Aquaponics Nut answers:
Would need to see what the setup actually looks like, but the Dipel is only going to effect caterpillar larvae and if you have been using the Bontaniguard and you still have roaches, then guess it won’t help.. Try the roach bait that is a gel form, comes in a large syringe. You are able to place it easily enough near sensitive areas (I have used it around large aquariums with success.). Might look into a small combact but powerful “mini vacuum” they make some for the pest control industry and you might be able to invidually rid the roaches from the plants.

Michael asks…
Aquaponics system help.?
im thinking about getting into Aquaponics but need a little info, so iv done so research and im going with the flood and drain system because i don’t have much room, im trying to find the cheapest way to do this now for the main fish tank can any one recommend the cheapest option or a cheaper one im hoping there’s one out there because not to keen on pay $400 for one it only needs to be 1 to 2m in diameter and 60cm or around there high? where can i get barramundi or silver perch fingerling’s in far north queensland? and with the flood and drain im worried about root rote and all that sort of stuff, in designs the outlet pipe is raised to determine the water level how does the water below that drain ? thanks for your answers

Aquaponics Nut answers:
For the drain its called an auto siphon, but if your doing flood and drain you use two pipes when the pump is off the water will come back down the fill pipe, once the fill pipe is connected to the bottom of your grow bed the fill pipe should be no more than 1″ above the bottom of the grow bed and the second should be half way up so when the pump is on it don’t over fill the grow bed or drain all the water from the fish tank.
As for getting stuff not sure i can help since i’m in Canada, but you can use any kinda tank. I put my first system together for $150 Canadian. Go to you local plumbing suppliers they’ll know how to help and i just got gold fish until i knew what i was doing.

aquaponics system help?
i have a aquaponic system set up with my fish tank with a drip system and grow bed above the tank the tank is 10 gallon with mollies and zebra danios do i need my filtering system to run

Aquaponics Nut answers:
Call the manufacturer on the tank toll free number to ask since the tank should have a model or SKU # on that brand to help with your fish tank system.

Betty asks…
Plants I can use in an aquaponics system?
I saw a picture on the internet, where this pump sucks water out of a fish tank, sends it up to an area where plants grow and the water goes through a substrate or something where it filters out a lot of the bad content (nitrate and stuff plants love), then it delivers the remaining water back into the fish tank to repeat the cycle.
Now, if I remember correctly, can’t you drown a lot of plants? Or most plants?
I was thinking about maybe growing something neat like vegetables, and aiding the growth of the vegetables with my crayfish tank (who are very messy eaters).
For these types of aquaponic set ups, do you have to turn the water on and off? Or can the cycle keep going and you just don’t have to worry about your plants drowning?
If drowning is an issue, what plants do I use?
Thanks
Chris

Aquaponics Nut answers:
Plants only drowned if there is no O2 in the root zone, so as long as the right growing medium is used to allow drainage this wont happen. Pumps are normally on a timer and operate similar to Flood and Drain in hydroponics whereby the growing medium is flooded and allowed to drain back to the tank normally 3 times daily but this can vary. Most plants will grow well in this type of system, a quick google search will tell you more as im no expert on aquaponics just hydro.

Susan asks…
What kinds of freshwater fish don’t eat plant roots?
Trying to get an aquaponics raft system going, but without fish it’s not taking off at all. It’s tied in with 2 other tanks with fish and another grow bed, the other grow bed is doing great. Really need to get some fish in there, we already have a bunch of goldfish but I know they will terrorize roots. Can’t find a list of fish that are safe for raft systems and won’t eat roots, anywhere online. Please help!!

Aquaponics Nut answers:
Any carnivore. (Except cichilds that like to tear up a tank)
Bettas, some tetras, guppies (in my personal experience, guppies do not go after plant roots).
